As Leander expands and becomes a great place to live for Austin commuters, there’s been a call for a new downtown hub, and city officials have been listening to the wants and needs of the community. A mixed-use project is underway and will include 1.3 acres of civic space called Leander Town Square. There’s been a lot of talk about what the public space will entail, but a decision hasn’t been made quite yet. That said, construction isn’t slowing down and neither is the excitement for the new project!
City officials are hopeful that the “Northline” project will spur tons of investment into the community. Once plans for roads and utilities are submitted to the Leander City Council and approved, the project will begin construction. Before the year is up, the community can expect to see changes to 115 acres south of San Gabriel Parkway between U.S. 183 and 183-A tollway.
The Northline is a proposed walkable center with a mix of retail, housing, hotels, businesses and restaurant space. The massive development may take anywhere from 10 - 15 years to be fully finished, but it will provide steady growth and a sea of new businesses and jobs to the area.
It will be worth $700 million to $800 million when finished and finally bring restaurant and retail developments to an area that has seen expansions with the addition of Austin Community College’s San Gabriel campus. With the urban feel of the project, Leander is about to become a city in its own right and give the town an identity. Leander may become the mecca for work, shop, and play, and city officials are excited to watch the project unfold.
