A Brief History

The City of Leander has quite a history. The first settlers arrived in the area around 1845, receiving bounty land grants in exchange for service in the Texas Revolution. By the 1870s, the village of Bagdad was established. Bagdad had a hotel, schools, several stores, a post office, churches and two blacksmith shops. Shortly after, the railroad arrived in the area. Situated one mile east of Bagdad, residents realized the benefit of the railroad and decided to move their homes and businesses closer to the tracks. This new town, established in 1882, was named Leander, after Leander “Catfish” Brown. Leander’s local economy was fueled by farming, ranching and cotton. As these industries grew, so too did the city of Leander. In the wake of World War II, Leander welcomed its first housing subdivisions and by 1978 the City of Leander was incorporated and elected its first mayor. Today, Leander’s population is estimated at more than 52,000 and was recently named the fastest growing city in the country.
