Spring is on the way, which means warmer temperatures and more expensive bills as you utilize your AC more. If you’re a homeowner looking for ways to save money this spring and summer, try some of these tips!
1. Refinance Your Mortgage
Mortgage rates are still low, but they’re rising again. Homeowners can save money monthly and yearly by refinancing their mortgage. While they’ll initially get a cheaper payment, there are still closing costs and an appraisal fee to pay. Consider how long you’re planning to live in your home. If it’s for more than a few years, refinancing could benefit you.
2. Turn Down the AC
This is the most obvious tip but can also be the hardest to implement when it’s one of those hot, humid Texas days. The cost of energy has risen to its highest point, so for every degree you increase on the AC, you can save 1-2% per degree. To help counteract our Texas temperatures, try utilizing ceiling fans or plug-in fans.
3. Install a Smart Thermostat
A smart thermostat that has an ENERGY STAR rating will save you money as homeowners will be able to control the temperature of their home when you’re gone. This means homeowners can schedule the temperature when you’re gone, like at work for 8 hours, and then program it to come on right before they leave work, so they walk into a cool home. A smart thermostat will help homeowners use less energy, saving you money.
4. Reassess Your Cable and Internet Bills
Like most bills, homeowners pay it without thinking about it or shopping around to see if there’s something cheaper. Take advantage of the extra daylight hours to call your provider and ask about a lower rate or if bundling will make your bills more affordable. Another way to make your internet bill cheaper is to lower your internet speed, if you only have a basic need for it, or if there are one or two people in the home. Also, make sure there aren’t sneaky charges you haven’t noticed before, like a rental fee for a modem or paying for channels you don’t watch anymore.
